Maria Pergay: Secret Garden

Demisch Danant opens an exhibition appropriately titled Secret Garden featuring a dozen new pieces by Maria Pergay, each displaying meticulous, jewelry-like handwork in bronze and patinated copper. Known for her legendary use of stainless steel, Pergay makes an exciting departure for the exhibition that features a Bronze Tree, a sculptural fixture more than six feet tall, and the Frozen Bush Table, made from nickeled bronze and glass. Demisch Danant celebrates the 45th anniversary of Pergay’s groundbreaking exhibition of stainless steel at Galerie Maison et Jardin in May of 1968.

Sam Baron: From Europe with Love

Greta Magnusson Grossman – A Car and Some Shorts

R 20th Century opens a retrospective on Swedish-American designer and architect Greta Magnusson Grossman this month, celebrating her unique approach to Swedish modernism that she brought from Stockholm to Los Angeles in the late 1930s. Selected works include desks and several lighting objects. She was featured in last year’s groundbreaking exhibition on California modernism at the LACMA, further cementing her in American design history.

Betty Woodman: Windows, Carpets and Other Paintings

Known for her hybrid painting-sculpture ceramic pieces, Betty Woodman’s third solo exhibition at Salon 94 opens this month. Woodman presents a theatrical vision of home, courtyard and garden, dividing the gallery into ideas of “inside” and “outside.” The home’s interior occupies one wall, containing vases, figures, shells and bouquets, while the opposite wall is staged like a walled garden or interior courtyard with paintings on canvas and ceramics hung on the walls framed as “windows.”

Gallery Libby Sellers opens an exhibition of new work by Italian-born Paola Petrobelli, a London-based designer that has worked with the same Murano glass maker since the beginning of her career in 1999. The Meccano construction kit system lends its name to the title of the exhibition, as each glass lamp, either floor based or ceiling pendant, is made from layers that can be reordered and swapped to create twenty four different forms and color patterns.
